I know I haven't done too many updates in the last month, but to tell the truth, life has been uuber crazy. I'm getting married in 7 weeks, closing and opening shows, trying to get into other shows. I know...excuses, excuses.
Anywho, I'm back, and ready to write! Here is an update on something I am working very hard upon. The goal of every musical theatre performer is to be considered a "Triple Threat," (i.e. you can act, sing, and dance very well). Right now, I would consider myself a Double and a Third Threat. I feel confident with my singing and my acting (most of the time), but dancing has always been an area where I struggle.
Here is why I classify my dancing ability as 1/3. I feel that dance requires three major components: 1. confidence, 2. technique, and 3. the ability to move your body well. There is of course style, but I put that on the same par as acting. I am 1/3 of a dancer because I know that I have the ability to move well...especially for a man of my size. Thus, confidence and technique are where I have been needing aid. I have been able to dance well in shows, but I always second and third guess myself when I do anything. Don't even get me started on how nervous I get when I learn there is a dance callback.
However, I am now taking the steps in order to improve myself. I have been taking a tap class at a local dance school. I felt that I would start with tap because of how often it is used in musical theatre. Now that we are over half way through the course, I am beginning to feel better with both my confidence as a dancer as well as my understanding of technique. I know I have a lot of work still to do before I end up looking anything like the guy pictured above, but, with work, I know I can get closer.
Here you will find my most recent updates, thoughts, and what else is going on in my life.
